We are very pleased to share with you that Mahakankala Buddhist Center has re-established our Dharma Center in this beautiful and inspiring space in the Mission area of downtown Santa Barbara. We believe that this move will help the people of the Central Coast make a special connection with Kadam Dharma, as this space is centrally located, well-respected and highly visible, with a large window through which light will shine to illuminate the holy image of Buddha. Thank you for your prayers and support in making this wish a reality...

"The development of Dharma knowledge, Dharma experience, and Dharma realizations all come from Dharma Centers, therefore they are the source of all happiness and are extremely precious, like priceless jewels that bestow ultimate benefit." -Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Our Mission

Our mission is to offer a path

of wisdom and compassion to the community of Santa Barbara

and the Central Coast through the explanation and practice of Kadampa Buddhism.

All efforts and proceeds go towards accomplishing this goal.

Mahakankala Buddhist Center is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization.

What We Offer...
Mahakankala Buddhist Center offers meditation classes throughout Santa Barbara and the Central Coast. These 'General Program' or 'GP' classes are designed to give a broad introduction to Buddhist meditation, teachings, and practice. The classes combine guided meditation with practical spiritual advice that you can immediately apply as a method for solving the stress and problems in your daily life. You will learn a variety of practical meditation techniques that help you to overcome negative states of mind, such as anger, attachment, jealousy and self-centeredness, and cultivate positive states of mind, such as patience, giving, wisdom and love. By familiarizing ourself with these virtuous minds, our life can become increasingly happy, harmonious and meaningful. Ultimately, these teachings provide a system for reaching our full spiritual potential through the transformation of our own mind.

In addition, we offer Sunday morning services at our Center entitled "Prayers for World Peace." These classes consist of an inspirational talk, short prayers for global peace and guided meditation to create peace inside of people’s hearts and therefore the world.

The guided meditations are the foundation for developing a powerful meditation practice. A regular meditation practice has many benefits:

  • Helps overcome stress, anxiety and worry
  • Brings inner calm and a sense of peace and well-being
  • Increases our wisdom so that we know how to solve our problems
  • Helps us deal with difficult people and situations
  • Shows us that authentic happiness is found within
  • Gives our life meaning and purpose
  • Teaches us how to care for others with kindness

If you would like to learn more about meditation or Buddhism, please join us for a meditation class. Everyone is welcome, and although the classes are taught as a series, you can drop in at any time; there is no pre-registration necessary. You can also order books on Buddhism and meditation through our website or visit us at our bookstore. Thank you for your interest in these precious teachings and we hope to see you soon...

"Without inner peace there is no real happiness at all. The more we control our mind, the more our inner peace increases and the happier we become. Therefore, the real method to make ourself happy is to control our own mind." -Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, The New Meditation Handbook
